Regional Development Australia Townsville and North West Queensland’s Community Housing Project aims to address one of the biggest issues facing rural and regional towns – housing availability.
It involves a co-ordinated approach between our 15 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and the Queensland and Federal governments.
The aim is to affordably and efficiently provide more housing in regional and remote Queensland to ease housing pressure and enable growth and prosperity across our region.
Modular housing model
The modular housing model provides an affordable and versatile construction option.
- Significant cost reduction
- Fast construction timeframe
- Versatile design
- Ability to include or exclude installation based on availability of local trades
Traditionally, modular or portable housing has been associated with temporary buildings like site offices but technology and offerings have evolved to now provide for a variety of design options from basic through to multi-storey high-end finishing.

Where to now?
RDA has held promising talks with our LGAs on the benefits of our community housing project.
We are developing a funding/partnership model for further discussions with State and Federal governments.
We envisage the first stage would see 50 new houses rolled out across the Townsville & North West Queensland region.
This is just one of the solutions needed to address what is a widespread issue across regional areas in Queensland, requiring a multi-faceted approach by all levels of government moving forward.
